Stylist Q and A: Marsha McClean- Anderson

Surrey Frills delves into the wardrobe of our Stylist in Focus, Marsha from Style Signature.

Tell us about you!

My passion has been fashion for as long as I can remember and I feel so lucky that I get to work in a job that I love and feel so passionate about. I am a qualified Personal Stylist based in Surrey covering mainly London and Surrey.

After working in fashion for nearly 6 years as a Stylist for Stella & Dot, a worldwide accessories and clothing brand, I graduated from the London College of Style with a Diploma in Personal Styling before setting up my own personal styling business, Style Signature.

I live in Epsom with my husband, 2 gorgeous boys and our miniature schnauzer Buddy!

Go-to style inspiration: Currently it’s fashion influencers Monikh and Lucy Williams who both have a super cool approach to personal style, often mixing high end with high street making their enviable style easy to replicate.

Last purchase:

Ba&sh biker style sleeveless leather jacket.

"This was a real investment purchase for me, but I know it will be in my wardrobe for years to come and I will get so much wear out of it."

Most fabulous piece in your wardrobe:

The leather jacket mentioned above. It is a forever piece but also very rock and roll! Plus, it also makes me feel so good when I wear it, which is so important when you are buying clothes.

Best vintage hunting ground:

The Loft in Walton on the Hill. They are a pre-loved shop run by 2 lovely ladies, Kikki and Bonni. You have to keep popping in to see what they have and they don’t always have vintage pieces - every so often you find an absolute gem!

The Loft in Walton-on-the-Hill

Favourite fashion designer:

I think it has to be Isabel Marant, a French fashion designer. I love her bohemian, never over thought type of look that her clothing embodies.

Upcoming label you’re most excited about:

I have two! Kitri is a British brand who sell classic pieces with a modern twist. They sell mostly online but they do have a pop up in Selfridges. It’s a really affordable brand that is loved by the Instagram fashionistas! They have gorgeous dresses, really expensive looking tailoring and shirts.

Charles and Keith is a Singaporean online accessories label that is like the Zara of the accessories world. It creates on-trend luxe looking bags for under £100. Again, loved by bloggers and fashionistas!

Favourite boutique:

Quattro Rish, Reigate, Surrey. They sell some great smaller, independent brands, which I love and their selection is always fabulous!

Must-have fashion item for AW19/20:

I would say anything with puffed sleeves! It’s such a huge trend this season and I think it looks great on everyone. It creates an amazing silhouette and if you widen your shoulder area, your waist instantly looks smaller!

Go-to weekend outfit:

I would say a midi dress - they are just so easy (it’s only one item) you look so stylish - with sandals in the Spring/Summer, trainers in the Autumn and tights and boots in the Winter with a chunky knit over the top. It’s just so versatile.

Career highlight:

It’s too hard to choose one. Every day I am grateful for how I have grown and how Style Signature has grown since graduating from the London College of Style 18 months ago. The gratitude and support I get from my clients on a daily basis fills me with immense pride & a sense of achievement.

Fave place in Surrey Hills:

I think it has to be Boxhill. I walk my dog, Buddy here when I can & the view from the hill is breathtaking.

Your top tip for sustainable dressing:

Organise your wardrobe and look after the pieces you have so that you can really enjoy wearing them. Also, if you can actually see what’s in your wardrobe you’re more likely to be creative when styling outfits & less likely to buy new pieces. There is so much value in having less.

"We are calmer when we have less."

One of the most conscious ways to shop is simply to buy things you only intend to wear time and time again that you will value and make last.  A wardrobe edit is the perfect way to get rid of what you no longer wear or fit into by giving it to charity and creating a wardrobe with pieces you love.

What services do you offer as a personal stylist?

My 3 main services that I offer as a stylist are: wardrobe edits, personal shopping and colour discovery sessions.

During a wardrobe edit, my main aim is to help you build that dream wardrobe that makes you happy every time you open it! Most of us wear 20% of our wardrobe 80% of the time! Do the words I “never have anything to wear” sound familiar?

I can help you look at clothes again in a new light. By helping you to put outfits together which are definitely you, I will give you a new found confidence in your wardrobe, making getting dressed in the morning exciting again!

I can also help you by taking you shopping (personal shopping).  I can help you to put outfits together that suit you, your body shape and your lifestyle.

Whether you are looking for an outfit for a special occasion or would like to update your current wardrobe, I can find you clothes that will make you feel fabulous and all within your budget. I do all the hard work for you, by pre-selecting the outfits to try on from a selection of shops, saving you time and money.

During a colour discovery session I will help you find the colours which enhance your skin tone and make you look younger and naturally radiant. You will be amazed at how many colours you can wear and look amazing in! The right colours will make you look younger (sometimes by 10 years!), and a brighter, better version of you.  It will enable you to have a perfectly blended wardrobe and to be able to shop with ease, confident in the knowledge that you will be able to find the perfect clothes in the right colours for you.

Next step for Style Signature:

I have been working behind the scenes over the past few months to bring a new and an exciting addition to my styling business - Style Signature Boutique, which I opened this month! I have been sourcing & in discussions with various stylish, contemporary, modern, elegant and good quality clothing and accessory brands,  to offer you a curated edit of beautiful fashion & accessories.

It is based in Epsom, Surrey and will be a place where you can go to transform yourself with beautiful clothes, whilst taking advantage of my styling services, if you wish, to determine the right clothes for you.

"I will work with you to help you determine which clothes and styles go best with your lifestyle, body shape and personality."
